We have seen our fair share of cold, wet weather this winter but it looks like we are in store for better conditions for the next 10 days. The chances for rain this coming week is pretty low except for Wednesday which has a 60% chance. The weather is going to be in the mid 40’s so at least there’s a chance the water won’t be freezing in the following days.
The Little River has been running high and cold for the last week which can make the fishing get kind of tough. You can still catch fish by getting nymphs deep and fishing “hard”. This isn’t the most exciting way to fish but it sure beats the heck out of sitting on the couch, and who knows you could get lucky and hook a fish of a lifetime. The water levels have come down to a fishable 2.5 ft and the water temp is getting warmer by the day, so things are looking up.
We got out on Abrams Creek in the Cades Cove area of the Smokies yesterday and headed down the trail to hit some of our favorite runs. Abrams is a great stream to fish in the winter; being spring fed, it stays a little warmer in the cold months. We fished smaller nymphs like birds nest, pheasant tail and stonefly nymphs with an indicator and a small split shot and did pretty well. We found some pretty plump fish in the slow pools and in the faster riffles.
A really nice surprise.
Abrams Creek runs through a gorge and some of the shaded areas still had ice on the rock bluffs making for some pretty stunning scenery. We also witnessed a good blue quill hatch along the way, but nothing was taking the adults on the surface, I guess it’s still too early. Hopefully this is a sign that spring isn’t too far away and we can expect some dry fly fishing before too long.
It was a great day to be out on the water especially with nice conditions for a change, the fishing was the icing on the cake. On our way back to the truck we were recapping the day and thought how could it get any better. Well when you’re in the Smokies the fishing isn’t the only thing to focus on, the surroundings are spectacular.
