With the low flows on the Holston River below Cherokee the water has become very clear. Usually in August when we have these conditions the water is also warm and the fish can be very spooky. The water temps are in the mid to high 60’s which keep the topwater bite going on strong. The clear cool water has the fish comfortable and eager to rise to poppers and terrestrial flies. Sight fishing has also been a thrill while on the river because some of the bigger fish have been hanging in the shallows to ambush baitfish or just something falling off the bank. The best part has been the air temps in the mid 80’s the last week and it’s been very comfortable to fish all day long.
A few nice fish from the past week.
The French Broad has been running high pretty much all season for the exception of a day or two here and there with the water cut off. As of lately TVA has been turning off the generators more and more and we have been able to get out and fish it. The water is clear and is at a good temperature. The fish have been aggressive on baitfish, crawdads and some topwater action. The good thing about the high water is that the fish have some shoulders on them from fighting the current for so long. Last wednesday I had the opportunity to take John on his first time fly fishing for smallmouth. The trip started and ended just how we like it, catching fish. I look forward to getting back on the French Broad real soon.
John with some nice smallies and a bonus Channel Kitty.
This has not been a normal year at all but believe me, mid 80’s and plenty of topwater action, we’ll take it. If you can get away and do some fishing then head this way, we would love to get you on the water (CONTACT US). Have a great day and hope to see you on the water.
